Ethical Consumer Campaign Framework

1. Purpose

Touch Paper supports lawful, ethical, evidence-led consumer mobilisation to improve media standards in the public interest.

2. Principles

Campaigns must be:

  • Lawful
  • Evidence-driven
  • Transparent
  • Focused on raising standards, not focused on individuals
  • For the benefit of the public, not members

3. Forms of Ethical Consumer Mobilisation

  • Boycotts
  • Letters to platforms
  • Public-interest petitions
  • Consumer pledges
  • Awareness-raising campaigns
  • Standards-improvement proposals

Each must be grounded in:

  • Evidence
  • Research
  • Clear community benefit
  • Respectful tone

4. What Ethical Consumer Campaigns Are Not

Touch Paper does not engage in:

  • Direct action
  • Civil disobedience
  • Occupations, blockades or disruption
  • Harassment of journalists or media workers
  • Partisan political campaigns

Such activities will not be conducted in Touch Paper’s name.

5. Approvals Process

All campaigns must:

  1. Include a research summary
  2. State intended community benefit
  3. Be reviewed by the Management Committee
  4. Be democratically prioritised by members when appropriate
  5. Be publicly transparent
